Two-Day Loop Drive

Stop #10: St. George Island State Park

Driving Directions: Turn east (left) on Gulf Beach Drive (CR 300) and travel 4.4 miles to St. George Island State Park.

Distance and driving time between this and previous stop: 4.4 miles / 8 minutes.

St. George Island State Park

Minimum time: One hour.

Description: 1,962 acres of long, narrow barrier island, with miles of undeveloped beaches, dunes, and emerald waters. Few parks offer better opportunities for Gulf Coast shelling.

This is also a wonderful place for neotropical migrations in spring when strong winds force songbirds to roost in the small oaks near the youth camp area and park campground. Shore birds such as the Snowy Plover, Least Tern, Black Skimmer, and Willet often nest along the park’s sandy shores and grass flats. Watch for Gopher Tortoise near the youth camp area. Sea turtles nest along the park beaches, with Loggerhead Turtles being the most common.

The park also features handicapped-accessible covered pavilions, bath and changing rooms, boardwalks to the beach, interpretation, boat ramps, picnic tables and grills.
